Hi! We’re Rob, Tracey, and Makai. Welcome to The Expat Experiment.
We seek to live life on our terms. Our greatest desire is to give our son a world perspective and an opportunity to learn more creatively and naturally.
We own and consume little, believing truly, travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.
The road to choosing a life of, hopefully, perpetual travel has been a long, bumpy and twisting one. We started on this path in search of, what we called “the good life” about 10 years ago. Personal events, the birth of our son and some serious self-evaluation led to the belief that life is too short to wait to see all the places in the world we wanted to see. We gave to much time and energy to jobs that left us burned out, feeling trapped because growing debt ruled our lives. We were like indentured servants to society’s expectation to spend and consume. We began to question our happiness and pursuing the “American dream” became less and less important.
Finally, in 2011 we finally had enough. After reading hundreds of inspiring travel blog posts and many thought provoking lifestyle books we finally came to our senses. Tales of world travelers, some seriously inspiring stories, lead us to believe “we can sell it all and travel too!” The stories we read broke the mental chains that bound us to the lifestyle that was slowly killing our souls. The purpose of this blog is to inspire and support anyone who wants to travel, forever or weeks or months a year. We share our challenges and victories to show, against all odds you can live the life you dream.
