This morning over breakfast with my 3-year-old son Makai it finally registered how truly happy I am with the lifestyle leap my family made 5 weeks ago today. After a statement Makai made at breakfast I was reminded of a conversation I had with a friends mom some 20 or so years ago.
Rob and I were not yet married, living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. While having dinner at a close friends moms house she asked me “Tracey, what do you want to do when you grow up?”. I answered something like “I would be happy to sell tee shirts on the side of the road if it means working for myself on my own terms”.
Little did I know that 20 years later we would be doing something almost exactly like that. Filled with more excitement about the future than 20 years ago! Five weeks ago today was my last day at “work” before working for myself at least for the summer! I was really scared to leave the financial security of my job. Rob and I both knew we could make a better living in more ways than just money working our home business instead of working for someone else. More time with our son, more time doing things we enjoy and more money too as it turns out. It would seem to be a no-brainer, right?
It is crazy how many twists and turns happen in life then one day you end up exactly where your heart always knew you would. It was a moment of serendipity, this morning at breakfast. Makai was trying to figure out why I wasn’t going to work anymore. He couldn’t understand that going to local markets to sell Robs art and our imported sundresses was my work now. Frankly, I don’t really think I believed it was my job now until I tried to explain it to him.
As I was explaining I could see him starting to understand. My heart swelled with so much joy as he said “ but mama you get to be with me now!”. That is the entire point of this dream.
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone elses life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other peoples thinking. Don’t let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
