I am the nervous flyer in our family, Rob is always cool as a cucumber on planes, and Makai can hardly contain his excitement to get up in the air. I am a lot better than I was; more flight experiences and learning about the principles of flight has helped me feel much less anxiety. We have taken nine flights over the last year. Eight of these flights were standard in our experience; okay service, really bad food, totally physically uncomfortable. One flight on Norwegians Dreamliner was pleasantly different than the rest.
The long haul flight on Norwegians 787 Dreamliner was a great experience! It was so good I am still thinking about it and felt compelled to write this post. The route was Fort Lauderdale to London Gatwick and it was absolutely the best flight we have ever taken. Here’s what made it remarkably better than all the rest:
Tickets Were Cheap- Value for Money was Astronomical!
All three of us flew from Fort Lauderdale, U.S.A. to London Gatwick in the U.K. for less than a $750 U.S.D, $718. 46 to be exact. This price included all taxes, all baggage, 2 meals each, dinner and breakfast (both of mine were specialty gluten free) crazy!!!!!! We found the flight on Norwegians site and absolutely could not resist such a great deal. With tickets being so cheap, I was a bit worried about the kind of plane; was it old, cramped, noisy, what was Norwegian trying to make up for with such a cheap ticket price?
We did not research the type of plane we would be jumping the Atlantic on, so when we boarded, we were shocked the plane was brand new! It was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the reason the tickets were so cheap is that these planes are not metal; they are something lighter, poly carbon fiber composite. It makes the plane lighter so it gets to its destination faster and uses less fuel in the process! Norwegian passes that huge saving on to its passengers, thank you so much Norwegian!
The Ride was so comfortable
No joke! We have never had a more comfortable flight. A few things contributed to this, the plane was so quiet even on takeoff. Sounds on planes have never been a problem for Makai. He has actually fallen asleep on takeoff before, engines revving, metal rattling, fans blowing and he fell asleep! I, on the other hand, feel uneasy and anxious when planes make noise especially on takeoff. The takeoff on our Norwegian flight was so remarkably quiet even I could have fallen asleep (not really, but it was unbelievably quieter). The whole flight noticeably was quieter.
Another big difference was the lighting was also so much better than other planes. It was soft, not glaring; I found them downright soothing! The lights are LED not halogen and that made all the difference. Windows on these planes are bigger too. They have a 65% bigger view than other planes offering more of the best light, natural light.
More Jet Less Lag, Seriously
Do your kids’ ears hurt when the plane starts to descend? How about that awful headache and bloated feeling you get after a long flight, totally sucks right? Both of these nasty things happen because of the cabin pressure needed to travel above the clouds. Most planes pressurize to simulate an altitude of 2400 meters which makes us feel like a blow-up pillow. This kind of pressure gives almost half of all airline passengers a headache as well! Norwegian Air thought that was somewhat mean so they pressurize their Dreamliners higher at 1800 meters. This drops the headache ratio to 10%. The odds of a headache are now the same as what they would be when the plane is on the ground.
These planes are also equipped with a fresh humid air system that can filter out perfume particles not to mention other more nasty air born stuff. The fresh humid air flow is possible because the planes aren’t metal so they can let in the more humid air resulting in less headache and dried out feeling. More pressurization helped Maks ears on landing, no pain at all, awesome! We all walked off the plane feeling great, no bloated feeling, no dry eyes.
The increased pressure, bigger windows, better lighting, and absolutely astounding price impressed us the most, but there were even more extras that made it a bit better still. The service was even terrific, with the kinder lights and better pressure it’s no wonder Norwegians staff are so cheerful. The touch screens on the seatbacks were nice too, you can control everything from them: lots of great music, movies, games, snacks, shopping, a 3D map, and even service. Everything you want or need at your fingertips, literally, including power! You can plug in at your seat too.
The flight was smoother, quieter and just more comfortable overall. Being a discount airline, Norwegians pricing is great as well. The service, food and on board entertainment were way better than expected. The flight was truly the best one we have ever had. For long haul flights, our first choice will always be Norwegians Dreamliner.

Really informative post Tracy! Thanks for going into detail about your experience with this airline. I’ve always wondered about it. I’ll give it a shot when I get the chance.

I am glad you found the article helpful Tanya! The experience was so noticeably better than any other fight we’ve taken I had to write about it. Next time you need to take a transcontinental flight I totally recommend going with Norwegian. The 787 Dreamliner makes the flight quicker, more comfortable and cheaper because Norwegian is a discount airline.

Great post, Tracey and I’m with you. I hate to fly, always have, probably always will. I imbibe in a cocktail in a little while pill before getting on a flight. I had a not so great experience in a single engine plane years (many years) ago and it’s always stayed with me. I agree it does help though when the airline is top notch. We flew Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Iran and it was a great experience – aside from the fact that I hate to fly! 🙂

little “white” pill, that is!

I had a bad experience on a little plane to Patti! I am scarred for life from that flight I’ll tell you:) I was shocked how much better I felt on this flight. Our experience with Norwegian on their Dreamliner was amazing and I seriously can’t wait to fly on one of those planes again! That feels so weird to say:)
