Whether you are traveling to Spokane for a long vacation or just for a short weekend getaway, you can have a great time without breaking the bank. Spokane is a four-season destination that is safe, friendly, and vibrant, with plenty of free things to do.
Explore the Outdoors
Created for the World's Fair event Expo '74, Riverfront Park is probably the most well-known park in Spokane and one of the most beautiful downtown parks in the US. Spend the day exploring over 100 acres, take in the spectacular Spokane Falls, and see the world's largest Radio Flyer. Other highlights include World's Fair Pavilion, the 1902 Great Northern Clock Tower, and the 1909 Looff Carousel. There is also the self-guided Sculpture Walk that includes dozens of public art installations, which showcases some of the city's most beloved public art, including sculptures, fountains, and a life-size sundial.
The 90-acre Manito Park is a nationally recognized botanical park. Established in 1904, this park boasts five gardens (Japanese, Rose, European, Perennial, and Lilac), a mirror pond, and a conservatory. This is a great place to bring the kids to enjoy walking and bike paths, playgrounds, and many spacious lawns.
Another idea for travelers with kids is the many free water parks and splash pads within Spokane's area parks, including a popular spot in Manito Park. Seventeen of the city's parks have splash pads where the little ones can cool off on a hot summer day.
Other parks to consider are the Finch Arboretum, a 65-acre woodland park with sprawling hills and beautiful pathways, and Riverside State Park, the second largest park in Washington State located only six miles outside of Spokane.
Art Galleries and Bing Crosby House
At Gonzaga University, the Jundt Art Museum is a 2,800 square-foot art gallery featuring the University's growing art collection, ongoing exhibits by local artists, and many traveling exhibits. The Chase Art Gallery in City Hall features traditional and contemporary works from local and regional artists. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week, and is open Monday evenings until 10 p.m.
You can also tour the house where singer and actor Bing Crosby lived as a boy. Bing Crosby House has a large collection of memorabilia from the classic crooner.
First Friday Art Festivals
Speaking of art, Spokane's downtown hosts a monthly event called First Friday. On the first Friday of every month, retailers and restaurants open for an evening of visual art and live performances. You can enjoy paintings, sculptures, photography, music, theater, and more, all within downtown Spokane. You can also experience wine tasting at one of the downtown wineries or take in the Ni Li Brewhouse behind-the-scenes tour.
